With the advent of large amounts of data in biomedicine, it can be very difficult to determine which data points are important for a given experiment. Microarrays are a high-throughput technique that allows scientists to determine which genes from over 30,000 genes in the human genome are changing between control and diseased cells/ tissues. However, because genes can interact with many genes, a fundamental question arises: is the change the cause of the disease or is it merely an effect of other gene changes?
Niraj, a Digicon employee based at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), helps scientists interpret their microarray data to try and answer this very question. He uses a wide variety of techniques, including machine learning, statistics, graph theory, data visualization, and other computational techniques, to find the genes that play a role in diseases and, more importantly, search for genes that directly cause disease.
This valuable support assists NIH in staying at the forefront of genetic research into the causes and effects of disease. The work that Niraj and other Digicon employees perform every day for this indispensible organization will result in positive gains for human health.
